What Are Microspheres?

As the name suggests, microspheres are microscopic lightweight fillers that can be created from various natural and synthetic materials such as glass, ceramic and polymer. Based on the intended application, some are hollow and some are solid. Microspheres can be added to plastics, resins, adhesives and composites. Their inclusion produces a number of benefits depending on the application, from lower density to improved insulation to more efficient machining.

Chase's Microspheres: A Lightweight Filler Breakthrough

Chase's microsphere products are created through a patented process that controls expansion and coating application, resulting in lightweight filler with a range of particle sizes, densities and materials.

Dualite Expanded Microspheres

Chase's Dualite Expanded Microspheres combine an inert component with an expanding polymeric microsphere, to produce an ultra-low density polymeric shell to which is affixed an inert exterior coating.

  • Dualite® E130-FR –We have taken our most robust expanded microsphere and replaced the normal calcium carbonate coating with alumina trihydrate (ATH), a common fire retardant.  This new product offers better survivability in more extreme industry flame testing than the standard grades. 
  • Dualite® E135-025D – Introducing our smallest microsphere product, with a particle size distribution centered around 25 microns.  Virtually all of the particles in the distribution are below the level that can be distinguished with the unaided eye.  This will open up new applications involving very thin coatings or where surface smoothness is critical to product performance.
  • Dualite® E135-040D – A new and improved version of our current E135-040D, featuring a tighter particle size distribution.

Dualite Unexpanded Microspheres

Heat-expandable polymeric microspheres consisting of a polymer shell that encapsulates a low boiling point liquid. Upon application of heat, the microspheres expand to form low density foam in systems that incorporate these microspheres.
