Tunnel Muck Management

Tunnel muck, especially in operations involving Earth Pressure Balance (EPB), Slurry, or Mixshield TBMs, often contains high moisture content and residual groundwater that prevent the muck from meeting regulatory slump test, solids criteria. This results in several challenges:

  • Transportation inefficiencies: Wet muck is difficult and costly to transport due to moisture content where it fails solids criteria and sheer volume.
  • Environmental compliance: Strict regulations mandate solid waste criteria, making untreated wet muck unsuitable for disposal without additional treatment.
  • Surface treatment complexities: Traditional methods, such as adding bulk amendments like lime or sawdust, consume time, increases total waste volume, changes soil characteristics, requires more space and labor
